The HBDC "Reflection” A Belly dance first - PEER REVIEW!!!
Join us October 13th 2017 at Honolulu Museum of Art Doris Duke Theatre for an intimate night of performances and commentary.
10 pre-selected performers will dance before a panel of world-renown performers. Reviews will be structured to guide the commentary and ensure all feedback is positive and constructive. Through written notes and a moderated verbal discussion, the panel will provide valuable feedback to help performers fine tune their piece for future audiences. This years panel will include : SADIE, SIMON AND SILVIA SALAMANCA!
The event will start with a Q & A with all visiting instructors, followed with performances by dancers looking to get an opportunity to improve their dance by getting the feedback of top professionals!
Reflection Purpose and Mission-To help build a positive Belly Dance community and foster in person communication between community members. As performers we have an obligation to our audience and as our dance scene continues to grow, our audiences will come to expect more from the belly dance scene as a whole. With the Performance Review opportunity, we can utilize our different skills and visions to build a stronger performance culture.
Process –Each performer will setup his or her act with all available costuming, props, music and anything else as necessary for performance. The performer will demonstrate the act in its entirety.Upon completing the performance, the HBDC panel will write notes for the performer. Sharing feedback on the performers act - visual presentation, musicality, technique and charisma just to name a few!
Audience –All members of the dance and art community are welcome to participate. Be prepared to write/share. We will provide you with index cards and pens. Please write down the highlights of their performance and notes to the performer
Visual Presentation-Costume, hair, makeup and how it relates to the dancers movement, music type, style

Technique-The dancers level of control of their body and movement
Charisma-Connection with audience and the entertainment quality of the performance
“We’re so excited to announce the annual Hawai‘i Belly Dance Convention. This year will be the best yet, bringing some of the best belly dancers in the world to Honolulu to share their knowledge and passion with dancers and dance lovers alike,” said convention founder Malia Delapenia. “We hope you’ll join us this October.”
Like a reflecting pool that mirrors the features of its subject, one of our greatest tools for learning and growth is feedback from our peers. As performers, we have an obligation to our audiences. As we grow as dancers our audiences come to expect more from us. Through meaningful collaboration, we can utilize our various skills and creative vision to build a stronger performance culture.
Now in its 13th year, the 2017 Hawai‘i Belly Dance Convention will bring performers and teachers from near and far to Honolulu to share the beauty and drama of Middle Eastern dance.
